Quaternion algebra

Summary

A quaternion algebra over a field FF is a central simple algebra over FF of dimension 44. When the characteristic of FF is not 22, it has a basis 1,i,j,k1, i, j, k with i2=ai^2 = a, j2=bj^2 = b and ij=−ji=kij = -ji = k for some nonzero a,b∈Fa, b \in F. Each one is either a division algebra or isomorphic to the algebra of 2×22 \times 2 matrices over FF. The class of a quaternion algebra in the Brauer group has order at most 22. Quaternion algebras are tied to quadratic forms and the Hilbert symbol.
