Definition

Let FF be a field. A quaternion algebra over FF is a central simple algebra over FF of dimension 44.

Let the characteristic of FF be different from 22, and let a,b∈Fa, b \in F be nonzero. The quaternion algebra (a,bF)\left(\frac{a, b}{F}\right) is the associative algebra over FF with basis 1,i,j,k1, i, j, k and multiplication determined by i2=a,j2=b,ij=−ji=k.i^2 = a, \qquad j^2 = b, \qquad ij = -ji = k.

Remarks

When the characteristic of FF is not 22, every quaternion algebra over FF is isomorphic to (a,bF)\left(\frac{a, b}{F}\right) for some nonzero a,ba, b. In this algebra k2=−abk^2 = -ab.

Example: (−1,−1ℝ)\left(\frac{-1, -1}{\R}\right) is Hamilton's algebra ℍ\mathbb{H} of quaternions. The element q=x+yi+zj+wkq = x + yi + zj + wk has qqˉ=x2+y2+z2+w2q \bar{q} = x^2 + y^2 + z^2 + w^2 for qˉ=x−yi−zj−wk\bar{q} = x - yi - zj - wk, so every q≠0q \ne 0 is invertible, and ℍ\mathbb{H} is a division algebra.

Example: (1,1F)≅M2(F)\left(\frac{1, 1}{F}\right) \cong M_2(F), through i↦(100−1)i \mapsto \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix} and j↦(0110)j \mapsto \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}.

Non-example: the algebra F[x,y]/(x2−a,y2−b,xy−yx)F[x, y]/(x^2 - a, y^2 - b, xy - yx) also has dimension 44, but it is commutative, so its center is not FF and it is not a quaternion algebra.

Every quaternion algebra is either a division algebra or isomorphic to M2(F)M_2(F). The algebra (a,bF)\left(\frac{a, b}{F}\right) is isomorphic to M2(F)M_2(F) if and only if the equation ax2+by2=1a x^2 + b y^2 = 1 has a solution with x,y∈Fx, y \in F.
