Definition
Let be an algebra with universe and let be a congruence on . For , let be the class of , and let be the quotient set of all classes. The quotient algebra has universe and the same signature as . Each -ary fundamental operation is interpreted by
Remarks
The operations are well defined because is compatible with each . The map is a surjective homomorphism , the natural map.
Example: for the ring and congruence modulo , the quotient is the ring . For instance when .
Non-example: for an equivalence relation that is not compatible, the formula gives no operation. Take with the classes "negative", "zero" and "positive". Computing with and gives the class of , but computing with and gives the class of .
For a group and the congruence of a normal subgroup , the quotient algebra is the quotient group .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
