Quotient category
Definition
Let be a category. A congruence on is a family of equivalence relations , one on each set of morphisms, with this property. If for , then for all and . The quotient category has the same objects as . Its morphisms are the equivalence classes of morphisms , with composition and identities .
Remarks
The compatibility condition makes the composition independent of the chosen representatives. The quotient functor is the identity on objects and sends to . It is universal: a functor with whenever factors uniquely as .
Example: view the monoid as a category with one object, whose morphisms are the integers and whose composition is addition. Let when is even. If then is even, so is a congruence, and the quotient is the one-object category of the group .
Non-example: on the same category let when or . This is an equivalence relation, but while and are not related, so it is not compatible with composition and gives no quotient category.
