Radial basis function interpolation

Builds on Radial basis functionMultivariate interpolationSystem of linear equationsPositive definite matrix

Definition

Let d≥1d \ge 1, let x1,…,xN∈ℝdx_1, \dots, x_N \in \R^d be pairwise distinct, let y1,…,yN∈ℝy_1, \dots, y_N \in \R, and let φ ⁣:[0,∞)→ℝ\varphi \colon [0, \infty) \to \R define a radial basis function. Let AA be the N×NN \times N matrix with entries Aij=φ(∥xi−xj∥)A_{ij} = \varphi(\norm{x_i - x_j}). If AA is invertible, the radial basis function interpolant of the data is s(x)=∑j=1Nλj φ(∥x−xj∥),s(x) = \sum_{j=1}^{N} \lambda_j \, \varphi(\norm{x - x_j}), where λ=(λ1,…,λN)\lambda = (\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_N) is the solution of the linear system Aλ=yA \lambda = y.

Remarks

By construction s(xi)=(Aλ)i=yis(x_i) = (A\lambda)_i = y_i, so ss is a multivariate interpolant of the data. For the Gaussian φ(r)=e−(εr)2\varphi(r) = e^{-(\varepsilon r)^2} the matrix AA is a positive definite matrix, hence invertible, for all distinct points in every dimension. For conditionally positive definite functions such as the thin plate spline, a low-degree polynomial is added to ss, with matching side conditions on λ\lambda, to get a uniquely solvable system.

Example: d=1d = 1, φ(r)=r\varphi(r) = r, nodes 0,10, 1, values y1=0y_1 = 0, y2=1y_2 = 1. Then A=(0110)A = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} and λ=(1,0)\lambda = (1, 0), so s(x)=∣x∣s(x) = \abs{x}, and indeed s(0)=0s(0) = 0, s(1)=1s(1) = 1.

Non-example: take φ(r)=r2\varphi(r) = r^2 on ℝ\R and the four nodes 0,1,2,30, 1, 2, 3. Each translate (x−xj)2(x - x_j)^2 lies in the space of polynomials of degree at most 22, which has dimension 33. So the four columns of AA, the values of these translates at the nodes, are linearly dependent, and AA is not invertible. Then the interpolant is not defined.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
