Radical axis
Builds on CirclePower of a pointLine
Definition
Let and be circles in the Euclidean plane with distinct centres and radii . For a point , its power with respect to is . The radical axis of and is the set
Remarks
Expanding the two powers, the condition becomes Since , this is a line perpendicular to . For three circles with non-collinear centres, the three radical axes meet in one point, the radical centre.
Example: let be and be . Then and , and they are equal exactly when .
Non-example: concentric circles fail the condition . For and , the powers differ by the constant , so no point has equal powers.
