Range of a function

Builds on Function

Definition

Let f ⁣:A→Bf \colon A \to B be a function. The range of ff is the set ran⁡(f)={f(a)∣a∈A}={b∈B∣∃a∈A, f(a)=b}.\operatorname{ran}(f) = \{f(a) \mid a \in A\} = \{b \in B \mid \exists a \in A, \, f(a) = b\}.

Remarks

The range is also called the image of ff, and it is the image f(A)f(A) of the whole domain. Some authors use "range" for the codomain. This node uses the meaning above. For f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} with f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2, the range is [0,∞)[0, \infty).

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 14 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
