Rational difference equation
Builds on Nonlinear difference equation
Definition
Let be an integer, and let be real numbers. A rational difference equation is a nonlinear difference equation of the form for real sequences . The initial values are taken such that the denominator is nonzero for every .
Remarks
Example: is a rational difference equation with , , , , . For all denominators are at least , and with the Fibonacci numbers. Non-example: is not of this form, since its denominator is not affine in . If all and , the equation is linear; the interesting cases have some . The case , with and , is the Riccati difference equation.
