Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field, and let be the projective plane over . An algebraic surface over is rational if there is a birational map .
Remarks
Equivalently, the function field of is isomorphic to the field of rational functions in two variables. Example: is rational: on the open subsets and the identity is an isomorphism, and it extends to a birational map . Non-example: for an elliptic curve , the surface is not rational, because the irregularity is a birational invariant, equal to for and to for . Every smooth rational surface is obtained from or from a Hirzebruch surface by a finite sequence of blow-ups of points.
