Definition
Let be a topological manifold of dimension . A real analytic atlas on is an atlas of charts with the following property. For all the transition map is real analytic. That is, each component of the transition map is given near each point by a convergent power series. A real analytic manifold is a topological manifold together with a maximal real analytic atlas on .
Remarks
Example: the sphere with the two stereographic projections is a real analytic manifold. The transition map is on , whose components are quotients of polynomials by a nonvanishing polynomial, hence real analytic.
Non-example: on take the identity chart and the chart with for and for . The map is a homeomorphism of with positive derivative, and the transition map is smooth, so this atlas makes a smooth manifold. But is not real analytic at : all its derivatives at agree with those of , while for . So the atlas is not real analytic.
A real analytic manifold is in particular a smooth manifold, since its maximal real analytic atlas lies in a unique maximal smooth atlas.
