Definition
Let be a metric space and let be a continuous map. A point is recurrent for if there is a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers such that as .
Remarks
Equivalent form: is recurrent if and only if , where is the -limit set of , the set of limits of sequences with . The same condition defines recurrence on a general topological space. Every point on a periodic orbit is recurrent: if , take . Every point of a minimal set is recurrent. Example: for on the circle with irrational, Dirichlet's approximation theorem gives infinitely many with within of an integer, so along these . Non-example: for on , the point has , so no subsequence tends to .
