Definition
Let be a complex analytic space. It is reduced if, for every , the stalk is a reduced ring, that is, it has no nonzero nilpotent elements.
Remarks
Example: the local model in given by is reduced. Its stalk at is , and if then and in the factorial ring , so and , hence . At the other points the stalk is a ring of convergent power series, which is reduced.
Non-example: the local model in given by is not reduced, since the class of in is nonzero and has square .
Equivalently, is reduced if every section of whose value vanishes at every point of its domain is zero. For any complex space , the quotient of by its sheaf of nilpotent germs defines a reduced complex space on the same topological space.
