Reduced word
Definition
Let be a set, and let be a set of new symbols, one for each . A word on is a finite string with and each in . A word is reduced when it contains no adjacent pair or with .
Remarks
The empty word, with , is reduced. Remove adjacent pairs and , one at a time, until no such pair is left. The result is a reduced word. For example, for , the word reduces to . A reduced word is cyclically reduced when its first and last letters are not inverse to each other.
