Definition
Let be a set, let be the free group on , and let . Let be the smallest normal subgroup of that contains , the normal closure of . The group with presentation is the quotient group . A group has the presentation when is isomorphic to .
Remarks
The elements of are the generators and the elements of are the relators; a relation stands for the relator . The cyclic group of order has the presentation , and the dihedral group of order has the presentation . Each group has a presentation, and each finite group has a presentation with and finite. A group is finitely presented when it has a presentation with and finite.
