Normal subgroup

Builds on SubgroupConjugate subgroup

Definition

Let GG be a group and let NN be a subgroup of GG. The subgroup NN is normal in GG when gng−1∈Ngng^{-1} \in N for all g∈Gg \in G and all n∈Nn \in N. The notation is N⊴GN \trianglelefteq G.

Remarks

Equivalently, gNg−1=NgNg^{-1} = N for each g∈Gg \in G, that is, NN equals each of its conjugates. Each group GG has the normal subgroups {e}\{e\} and GG. In the symmetric group S3S_3, the subgroup {e,(1 2 3),(1 3 2)}\{e, (1\,2\,3), (1\,3\,2)\} is normal, but the subgroup {e,(1 2)}\{e, (1\,2)\} is not.
