Universal property of the abelianisation
Builds on AbelianisationUniversal property of the quotient groupA quotient is abelian iff the subgroup contains the commutator subgroup
Statement
Let be a group, let be the projection to its abelianisation, and let be an abelian group. For each group homomorphism , there is exactly one group homomorphism with .
Remarks
Each commutator goes to under , because is abelian, so . Then the universal property of the quotient group gives . Thus the homomorphisms from to correspond exactly to the homomorphisms from to .
