Group theory and generalizations Proposition

Normality via left and right cosets

Builds on Normal subgroupLeft cosetRight coset

Statement

Let GG be a group and let NN be a subgroup of GG. Then NN is normal in GG if and only if gN=NggN = Ng for each g∈Gg \in G.

Remarks

Here gNgN is a left coset and NgNg is a right coset. The equation gN=NggN = Ng is equivalent to gNg−1=NgNg^{-1} = N, by multiplying on the right by g−1g^{-1}. The condition does not say that gn=nggn = ng for each n∈Nn \in N; it says only that the two sets are equal.
