Right coset

Builds on Subgroup

Definition

Let GG be a group, let HH be a subgroup of GG, and let g∈Gg \in G. The right coset of HH with representative gg is the set Hg={hg:h∈H}Hg = \{hg : h \in H\}.

Remarks

Two right cosets HaHa and HbHb are equal when ab−1∈Hab^{-1} \in H, and they are disjoint otherwise. In an abelian group, each right coset HgHg equals the left coset gHgH. In general gHgH and HgHg can differ, but the map gH↦Hg−1gH \mapsto Hg^{-1} is a bijection from the left cosets to the right cosets.
