Groups of order pq

Builds on Third Sylow theoremThe number of Sylow subgroups divides the indexInternal direct productProduct of cyclic groups is cyclic iff the orders are coprime

Example

Let p<qp < q be prime numbers such that pp does not divide q−1q - 1, and let GG be a group of order pqpq. The number nqn_q divides pp and satisfies nq≡1(modq)n_q \equiv 1 \pmod q, so nq=1n_q = 1, because p<qp < q. The number npn_p divides qq and satisfies np≡1(modp)n_p \equiv 1 \pmod p; since p∤q−1p \nmid q - 1, np=1n_p = 1. So GG has a normal subgroup PP of order pp and a normal subgroup QQ of order qq. They meet only in ee, so GG is the internal direct product of PP and QQ. Thus G≅ℤ/pℤ×ℤ/qℤ≅ℤ/pqℤG \cong \mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z} \cong \mathbb{Z}/pq\mathbb{Z}, and GG is cyclic. For example, each group of order 1515 is cyclic. If pp divides q−1q - 1, there is also a group of order pqpq that is not cyclic, for example the dihedral group D3D_3 of order 66.
