Conjugate subgroup

Builds on SubgroupConjugate elements

Definition

Let GG be a group, let HH be a subgroup of GG, and let g∈Gg \in G. The conjugate of HH by gg is the set gHg−1={ghg−1:h∈H}gHg^{-1} = \{ghg^{-1} : h \in H\}. Two subgroups HH and KK of GG are conjugate when K=gHg−1K = gHg^{-1} for some g∈Gg \in G.

Remarks

The set gHg−1gHg^{-1} is a subgroup of GG, and h↦ghg−1h \mapsto ghg^{-1} is an isomorphism from HH to gHg−1gHg^{-1}. Conjugacy of subgroups is an equivalence relation on the set of subgroups of GG. A subgroup that equals each of its conjugates is a normal subgroup.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
