Group theory and generalizations Theorem

A subgroup whose index is the smallest prime divisor of the order is normal

Builds on Normal subgroupIndex of a subgroup

Statement

Let GG be a finite group and let pp be the smallest prime number that divides ∣G∣|G|. Let HH be a subgroup of GG of index pp. Then HH is normal in GG.

Remarks

For p=2p = 2 this is the fact that subgroups of index two are normal. The proof lets GG act on the pp left cosets of HH. The kernel KK of this action lies in HH, and [G:K][G : K] divides both ∣G∣|G| and p!p!. Since pp is the smallest prime divisor of ∣G∣|G|, this forces [G:K]=p[G : K] = p, so H=KH = K is normal.
