Conjugate elements

Builds on Group

Definition

Let GG be a group and let a,b∈Ga, b \in G. The element bb is conjugate to aa when there is g∈Gg \in G with b=gag−1b = gag^{-1}. The element gag−1gag^{-1} is called the conjugate of aa by gg.

Remarks

Conjugacy is an equivalence relation on GG; its classes are the conjugacy classes. In an abelian group, gag−1=agag^{-1} = a, so each element is conjugate only to itself. Conjugate elements have the same order. In the group of invertible matrices, conjugate matrices are similar matrices.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
