Definition

Let XX be an algebraic variety over a field, and let Zr(X)Z_r(X) be the group of rr-dimensional algebraic cycles on XX. Let WβŠ‚XW \subset X be an irreducible closed subvariety of dimension r+1r + 1, and let ff be a nonzero element of its function field k(W)k(W). For each irreducible closed subvariety VβŠ‚WV \subset W of dimension rr, the local ring A=π’ͺW,VA = \mathcal{O}_{W, V} is a one-dimensional Noetherian local domain with fraction field k(W)k(W). Write f=a/bf = a/b with a,b∈Aβˆ–{0}a, b \in A \setminus \set{0}. Set ord⁑V(f)=β„“A(A/aA)βˆ’β„“A(A/bA)\operatorname{ord}_V(f) = \ell_A(A/aA) - \ell_A(A/bA), where β„“A\ell_A is the length of an AA-module. This does not depend on the choice of aa and bb. The divisor of ff is the rr-cycle div⁑(f)=βˆ‘Vord⁑V(f) [V]\operatorname{div}(f) = \sum_V \operatorname{ord}_V(f) \, [V], a finite sum. Let Rat⁑r(X)βŠ‚Zr(X)\operatorname{Rat}_r(X) \subset Z_r(X) be the subgroup generated by all such div⁑(f)\operatorname{div}(f), for all WW and ff. Two rr-cycles Z,Zβ€²Z, Z' are rationally equivalent if Zβˆ’Zβ€²βˆˆRat⁑r(X)Z - Z' \in \operatorname{Rat}_r(X).

Remarks

When WW is normal along VV, ord⁑V\operatorname{ord}_V is the discrete valuation of k(W)k(W) at VV. Example: on X=β„™1X = \mathbb{P}^1 over a field kk, take W=XW = X and f=(xβˆ’a)/(xβˆ’b)f = (x - a)/(x - b) with aβ‰ ba \ne b in kk. Then div⁑(f)=[a]βˆ’[b]\operatorname{div}(f) = [a] - [b], so the points aa and bb are rationally equivalent. Non-example: on an elliptic curve EE over an algebraically closed field, two distinct points PP and QQ are not rationally equivalent. If they were, then [P]βˆ’[Q]=div⁑(f)[P] - [Q] = \operatorname{div}(f) for some f∈k(E)Γ—f \in k(E)^{\times}, since W=EW = E is the only choice on a curve. Then ff would be a rational function of degree 11, hence an isomorphism Eβ†’β„™1E \to \mathbb{P}^1, which is impossible because EE has genus 11. Equivalently, Zβˆ’Zβ€²=βˆ‘i([Vi(0)]βˆ’[Vi(∞)])Z - Z' = \sum_i \big([V_i(0)] - [V_i(\infty)]\big) for finitely many subvarieties ViβŠ‚XΓ—β„™1V_i \subset X \times \mathbb{P}^1 of dimension r+1r + 1 that map onto β„™1\mathbb{P}^1, where Vi(a)V_i(a) is the fiber of ViV_i over aa, viewed in XX.
