Module over a ring

Definition

Let RR be a ring with identity element 11. A left module over RR is an abelian group (M,+)(M, +) together with a map R×M→MR \times M \to M, (r,x)↦rx(r, x) \mapsto rx, such that, for all r,s∈Rr, s \in R and x,y∈Mx, y \in M:

  1. r(x+y)=rx+ryr(x + y) = rx + ry.
  2. (r+s)x=rx+sx(r + s)x = rx + sx.
  3. (rs)x=r(sx)(rs)x = r(sx).
  4. 1x=x1x = x.

Remarks

If RR is a field, then an RR-module is the same as a vector space over RR. Each abelian group is a module over the ring ℤ\Z, with nx=x+⋯+xnx = x + \cdots + x (nn terms) for n>0n > 0. The ring RR is a module over itself, and RnR^n is a module with the operations on coordinates. Right modules use a map M×R→MM \times R \to M; over a commutative ring, the two notions are the same.
