Faithful module

Builds on Module over a ringAnnihilator

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let MM be a left RR-module. The module MM is faithful if its annihilator ann⁡R(M)={r∈R:rm=0 for all m∈M}\operatorname{ann}_R(M) = \set{r \in R : rm = 0 \text{ for all } m \in M} is {0}\set{0}.

Remarks

Equivalently, the ring homomorphism R→End⁡ℤ(M)R \to \End_\Z(M) that sends rr to the map m↦rmm \mapsto rm is injective. Example: for a field KK, the column space KnK^n is a faithful Mn(K)M_n(K)-module. The check: if Aej=0A e_j = 0 for every standard basis vector eje_j, then every column of AA is zero, so A=0A = 0. Non-example: for n≥2n \ge 2, the ℤ\Z-module ℤ/nℤ\Z/n\Z is not faithful, since n≠0n \ne 0 lies in its annihilator. Every module MM is faithful as a module over R/ann⁡R(M)R / \operatorname{ann}_R(M).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
