Definition

Let RR be a ring. A left ideal of RR is a subset I⊆RI \subseteq R with these properties.

  1. II is a subgroup of the additive group (R,+)(R, +).
  2. For all r∈Rr \in R and a∈Ia \in I, ra∈Ir a \in I.

If RR is a commutative ring, a left ideal is simply called an ideal.

Remarks

In ℤ\mathbb{Z}, the set nℤn\mathbb{Z} of the multiples of nn is an ideal for every integer nn. Every ring RR has the ideals {0}\{0\} and RR. An ideal contains 11 if and only if it is all of RR. In a noncommutative ring, one also uses right ideals and two-sided ideals.
