Noncommutative Gröbner basis
Definition
Let be a field, let be a finite set, and let be the free monoid of words in . Let be the free algebra on , whose basis is . Fix an admissible order on : a well-order such that implies for all words . For a nonzero , its leading word is the largest word that occurs in with a nonzero coefficient. Let be a two-sided ideal of . A subset is a (noncommutative) Gröbner basis of if for every nonzero there are and words with
Remarks
A Gröbner basis of generates as a two-sided ideal. The words that contain no , , as a subword are the normal words, and their images form a -basis of . Example: with the degree-lexicographic order, , and generated by , so . The word has no overlap with itself, so by the diamond lemma is a Gröbner basis; the normal words are , and . Non-example: with the same order, let be generated by , so . The element lies in , and its leading word is , which does not contain . So is not a Gröbner basis of .
