Definition

A field is a commutative ring KK with these two properties.

  1. 1≠01 \neq 0 in KK.
  2. Every nonzero element of KK is a unit: for each a∈Ka \in K with a≠0a \neq 0, there is b∈Kb \in K with ab=1a b = 1.

Remarks

The rings ℚ\mathbb{Q}, ℝ\mathbb{R} and ℂ\mathbb{C} are fields. The ring ℤ\mathbb{Z} is not a field. For a prime number pp, the ring ℤ/pℤ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z} is a field. Every field is an integral domain. A division ring has the same axioms without the commutativity of the multiplication.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
