Definition

Let XX be a connected scheme and let xˉ ⁣:Spec⁡Ω→X\bar{x} \colon \operatorname{Spec} \Omega \to X be a geometric point, with Ω\Omega an algebraically closed field. A finite étale cover of XX is a morphism Y→XY \to X that is finite and étale. Let FEtX\mathrm{FEt}_X be the category of finite étale covers of XX, with morphisms over XX. The fiber functor Fxˉ ⁣:FEtX→SetF_{\bar{x}} \colon \mathrm{FEt}_X \to \mathrm{Set} sends YY to the finite set of geometric points of YY over xˉ\bar{x}, that is, of morphisms Spec⁡Ω→Y\operatorname{Spec} \Omega \to Y that lift xˉ\bar{x}. The étale fundamental group is the automorphism group of this functor: π1eˊt(X,xˉ)=Aut⁡(Fxˉ).\pi_1^{\text{ét}}(X, \bar{x}) = \Aut(F_{\bar{x}}).

Remarks

The group π1eˊt(X,xˉ)\pi_1^{\text{ét}}(X, \bar{x}) is a profinite group, as a closed subgroup of ∏YSym⁡(Fxˉ(Y))\prod_Y \operatorname{Sym}(F_{\bar{x}}(Y)). By Grothendieck's Galois theory, FxˉF_{\bar{x}} is an equivalence between FEtX\mathrm{FEt}_X and the category of finite sets with a continuous action of π1eˊt(X,xˉ)\pi_1^{\text{ét}}(X, \bar{x}). Example: for X=Spec⁡kX = \operatorname{Spec} k with kk a field, the finite étale covers are finite products of finite separable extensions of kk. Choosing xˉ\bar{x} amounts to choosing a separable closure ksk^{s}, and π1eˊt(X,xˉ)≅Gal⁡(ks/k)\pi_1^{\text{ét}}(X, \bar{x}) \cong \Gal(k^{s}/k), the absolute Galois group. Non-example: the exponential map ℂ→ℂ∗\C \to \C^{*} is a covering space with infinitely many sheets, so it is not a finite étale cover and does not enter FEtX\mathrm{FEt}_X. Therefore π1eˊt\pi_1^{\text{ét}} of the complex punctured line is ℤ^\widehat{\Z}, the profinite completion of the topological fundamental group ℤ\Z, and not ℤ\Z itself. For a variety XX over ℂ\C, the Riemann existence theorem gives π1eˊt(X)≅π1(X(ℂ))^\pi_1^{\text{ét}}(X) \cong \widehat{\pi_1(X(\C))}. In characteristic p>0p > 0 the affine line has nontrivial finite étale covers, such as the Artin–Schreier covers yp−y=xy^p - y = x.
