Group theory and generalizations Definition
Group action
Builds on GroupSymmetric groupGroup homomorphism
Definition
Let be a group with identity , and let be a set. A (left) action of on is a map , , with these two properties:
- for each .
- for all and .
Remarks
For each , the map is a bijection of , with inverse . The map that sends to this bijection is a group homomorphism from to the symmetric group . Conversely, each homomorphism gives an action of on . A right action is a map with and .
