Space of connections modulo gauge

Description

Let GG be a compact Lie group with Lie algebra 𝔀\mathfrak{g}, let XX be a compact manifold, and let Pβ†’XP \to X be a principal GG-bundle. The space π’œ(P)\mathcal{A}(P) of connections on PP is an affine space over the vector space Ξ©1(X;adP)\Omega^1(X; \mathrm{ad} P) of 11-forms with values in the adjoint bundle. The gauge group 𝒒(P)\mathcal{G}(P) acts on π’œ(P)\mathcal{A}(P), and the space of connections modulo gauge is the quotient space ℬ(P)=π’œ(P)/𝒒(P).\mathcal{B}(P) = \mathcal{A}(P) / \mathcal{G}(P).

Remarks

The simplest case is G=U(1)G = U(1), X=S1=ℝ/2Ο€β„€X = S^1 = \R / 2\pi \Z and PP trivial. A connection is A=ia(t) dtA = i a(t) \, dt with aa a smooth real function, and a gauge transformation g=eiΟ•g = e^{i \phi}, with ϕ ⁣:ℝ→ℝ\phi \colon \R \to \R smooth and Ο•(t+2Ο€)βˆ’Ο•(t)∈2Ο€β„€\phi(t + 2\pi) - \phi(t) \in 2\pi \Z, sends AA to A+i dΟ•A + i \, d\phi. So the class of AA is determined by ∫02Ο€a(t) dt\int_0^{2\pi} a(t) \, dt modulo 2Ο€2\pi, and ℬ(P)\mathcal{B}(P) is a circle; the map is the holonomy A↦exp⁑(βˆ’i∫02Ο€a dt)∈U(1)A \mapsto \exp(-i \int_0^{2\pi} a \, dt) \in U(1).

In general ℬ(P)\mathcal{B}(P) is not a manifold, because the stabilisers of connections vary. The stabiliser of AA always contains the centre of GG, acting by constant gauge transformations. The connection AA is called irreducible when its stabiliser is exactly the centre.

After completing in suitable Sobolev norms, the irreducible connections modulo gauge form a Hilbert manifold, with local charts given by the Coulomb slice {A+a:dAβˆ—a=0,Β aΒ small}\set{A + a : d_A^* a = 0, \ a \text{ small}}.
