Description

Let GG be a Lie group and P→XP \to X a smooth principal GG-bundle over a smooth manifold XX, with GG acting on PP on the right. The gauge group 𝒢(P)\mathcal{G}(P) is the set of diffeomorphisms u ⁣:P→Pu \colon P \to P such that π∘u=π\pi \circ u = \pi and u(pg)=u(p)gu(p g) = u(p) g for all p∈Pp \in P and g∈Gg \in G, with composition as product.

It is a group: the identity map has both properties, and so does the composite of two such maps. The inverse of such a map uu commutes with π\pi and with the right action, because uu does.

Remarks

Equivalent forms: a gauge transformation uu is the same as a GG-equivariant map σ ⁣:P→G\sigma \colon P \to G, with σ(pg)=g−1σ(p)g\sigma(p g) = g^{-1} \sigma(p) g, through u(p)=p σ(p)u(p) = p \, \sigma(p). So 𝒢(P)\mathcal{G}(P) is the group of sections of the bundle P×GGP \times_G G associated with the conjugation action. If P=X×GP = X \times G is trivial, then 𝒢(P)\mathcal{G}(P) is the group C∞(X,G)C^\infty(X, G) of smooth maps with pointwise product.

The gauge group acts on the space of connections on PP by pullback. Take a trivial bundle and a matrix group GG, and write a connection as a 𝔤\mathfrak{g}-valued 11-form AA. Then a map g ⁣:X→Gg \colon X \to G sends AA to g−1Ag+g−1dgg^{-1} A g + g^{-1} dg, and the curvature changes to g−1FAgg^{-1} F_A g.
