Fixed points of an action

Definition

Let a group GG act on a set XX. A point x∈Xx \in X is a fixed point of the action when g⋅x=xg \cdot x = x for each g∈Gg \in G. The set of all fixed points is written XGX^G. For g∈Gg \in G, the set of points fixed by gg is Xg={x∈X:g⋅x=x}X^g = \{x \in X : g \cdot x = x\}.

Remarks

A point xx is a fixed point if and only if its orbit is {x}\{x\}, if and only if its stabiliser is GG. For the action of GG on itself by conjugation, the fixed points are the elements of the centre Z(G)Z(G). The sets XgX^g appear in Burnside's lemma.
