The number of Sylow subgroups is the index of the normaliser
Builds on Second Sylow theoremNormaliserOrbit-stabiliser theorem
Statement
Let be a finite group, let be a prime number, and let be a Sylow p-subgroup of . Then , where is the normaliser of .
Remarks
By the second Sylow theorem, acts transitively by conjugation on . The stabiliser of is , so the orbit-stabiliser theorem gives the formula. In particular, is normal in if and only if .
