Intersection

Builds on SetElementConjunction

Definition

Let AA and BB be sets. The intersection of AA and BB is the set A∩B={x∈A∣x∈B}.A \cap B = \{x \in A \mid x \in B\}. So an object xx is an element of A∩BA \cap B when x∈Ax \in A and x∈Bx \in B.

Remarks

Example: {1,2}∩{2,3}={2}\{1, 2\} \cap \{2, 3\} = \{2\}. Intersection is commutative and associative, and A∩B⊆AA \cap B \subseteq A. When A∩B=∅A \cap B = \varnothing, the sets are disjoint. The intersection of a family of sets is in intersection of a family of sets.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 5 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
