Absorbing Markov chain

Builds on Markov chainTransition matrixChapman–Kolmogorov equation

Definition

Let (Xn)(X_n) be a time-homogeneous Markov chain with transition matrix P=(pij)P = (p_{ij}) on a state space SS. A state i∈Si \in S is absorbing if pii=1p_{ii} = 1. A state that is not absorbing is transient. The chain is an absorbing Markov chain if it has at least one absorbing state and each state can reach an absorbing state. That is, for each i∈Si \in S there are an absorbing state jj and an n≥0n \ge 0 with pij(n)>0p^{(n)}_{ij} > 0.

Remarks

For a finite absorbing chain, write PP in the canonical form with the transient states first: P=(QR0I)P = \begin{pmatrix} Q & R \\ 0 & I \end{pmatrix}. The fundamental matrix is N=(I−Q)−1=∑n=0∞QnN = (I - Q)^{-1} = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} Q^n. The entry NijN_{ij} is the expected number of visits to the transient state jj, starting from the transient state ii. The expected number of steps before absorption from ii is the ii-th entry of N𝟏N \mathbf{1}, where 𝟏\mathbf{1} is the column vector of ones. The absorption probabilities are the entries of NRNR. A finite absorbing chain reaches an absorbing state with probability 11.
