Definition
Let be an integrable real random variable on a probability space , and let be a σ-algebra. A conditional expectation of given is an integrable random variable with these two properties:
- is -measurable.
- for each . Such a exists, and two such random variables are equal almost surely. One writes . For a random variable , , where is the σ-algebra generated by .
Remarks
The existence follows from the Radon–Nikodym theorem. For , is the orthogonal projection of onto . For a discrete , with when . This is the expectation of under the conditional probability . The conditional expectation is linear and monotone. If is -measurable and is integrable, then . If is independent of , then .
