Minimal sufficient statistic
Builds on Sufficient statisticStatistical model
Definition
Let be a statistical model on and let be the data. A statistic is minimal sufficient if:
- is sufficient for , and
- for every sufficient statistic there is a measurable function with -almost surely for every .
Remarks
Example: for i.i.d. Bernoulli(), , the sum is minimal sufficient. Indeed, the likelihood ratio is free of only when , and by the criterion below this makes minimal. Non-example: for , the whole sample is sufficient but not minimal. Clause 2 fails with : is not a function of , since and have the same sum. A common criterion, for a model with densities : if holds exactly when does not depend on , then is minimal sufficient. A minimal sufficient statistic is unique up to one-to-one measurable functions.
