Definition

Let {Pθ:θ∈Θ}\set{P_\theta : \theta \in \Theta} be a statistical model on a measurable space (S,𝒮)(S, \mathcal{S}), and let XX be the identity random element of SS. Let T=T(X)T = T(X) be a statistic with values in a measurable space. The statistic TT is sufficient for θ\theta if the following holds for every A∈𝒮A \in \mathcal{S}. There is a version of the conditional probability Pθ(X∈A∣T)P_\theta(X \in A \mid T) that is the same for all θ∈Θ\theta \in \Theta. That is, there is a function kA(T)k_A(T) with kA(T)=Pθ(X∈A∣T)k_A(T) = P_\theta(X \in A \mid T) PθP_\theta-almost surely, for every θ\theta, as a conditional expectation of 𝟏{X∈A}\mathbf{1}\set{X \in A} given TT.

Remarks

Example: let X=(X1,…,Xn)X = (X_1, \dots, X_n) be i.i.d. Bernoulli(pp), p∈(0,1)p \in (0, 1), and T=X1+⋯+XnT = X_1 + \dots + X_n. For x∈{0,1}nx \in \set{0, 1}^n with x1+⋯+xn=tx_1 + \dots + x_n = t, one has Pp(X=x∣T=t)=pt(1−p)n−t/((nt)pt(1−p)n−t)=1/(nt)P_p(X = x \mid T = t) = p^t(1 - p)^{n - t} / \left(\binom{n}{t} p^t (1 - p)^{n - t}\right) = 1/\binom{n}{t}, which does not depend on pp; so TT is sufficient. Non-example: for n≥2n \ge 2, the statistic X1X_1 is not sufficient, since given X1X_1 the variable X2X_2 is still Bernoulli(pp), and its law depends on pp. The whole sample XX is always sufficient, and any one-to-one measurable function of a sufficient statistic with measurable inverse is sufficient.
