Statistical model
Builds on Sigma-algebraProbability measure
Definition
Let be a set, the sample space, with a sigma-algebra on . A statistical model on is a pair , where is a set of probability measures on . The model is often written with an index set as , and is the parameter space.
Remarks
Example: with all subsets measurable, and where , for . Each is a probability measure, because the binomial theorem gives . This is the model of independent tosses of a coin with unknown chance of heads. Non-example: the set of measures is not a statistical model, because for the measure has total mass , so it is not a probability measure. The data are modelled as a value of a random element with law in .
