Definition

Let 𝒫={Pθ:θ∈Θ}\mathcal{P} = \set{P_\theta : \theta \in \Theta} be a statistical model on a sample space SS. Let x∈Sx \in S be an observed value of a random element XX whose law is PθP_\theta for an unknown θ\theta. Statistical inference is the derivation, from xx, of statements about θ\theta or about a function τ(θ)\tau(\theta). A rule of inference is a map defined on SS that does not depend on θ\theta; its main kinds are these.

  1. A point estimate: a value τ^(x)\hat{\tau}(x) of an estimator of τ(θ)\tau(\theta).
  2. A set estimate: a set C(x)C(x) of plausible values of τ(θ)\tau(\theta).
  3. A test: a decision φ(x)∈{0,1}\varphi(x) \in \set{0, 1} between a hypothesis θ∈Θ0\theta \in \Theta_0 and its alternative θ∈Θ∖Θ0\theta \in \Theta \setminus \Theta_0.

Remarks

Example: for nn independent 𝒩(θ,1)\mathcal{N}(\theta, 1) observations, the sample mean xˉ\bar{x} is a point estimate of θ\theta, and [xˉ−1.96/n,xˉ+1.96/n][\bar{x} - 1.96/\sqrt{n}, \bar{x} + 1.96/\sqrt{n}] is a set estimate of θ\theta. Both are computed from the data alone, as the definition requires. Non-example: the rule "report θ\theta" is not a rule of inference, since it uses the unknown parameter. Inference rules are built from statistics and judged either by their behaviour over repeated samples or through a posterior distribution.
