Definition
Let be a statistical model and let be the data, with law for a fixed unknown . Frequentist inference is the approach to statistical inference in which:
- the parameter is treated as fixed, and no probability distribution is placed on ;
- a procedure is assessed through its sampling distribution under ;
- a guarantee about must hold for every , or be stated as a function of .
Remarks
Example: a confidence set of level is a set-valued statistic with for every . For i.i.d. observations, , with the quantile of , has coverage exactly for every , since . Non-example: a Bayesian credible interval is computed from a posterior distribution on ; it violates clause 1, and in general it has no coverage guarantee that holds for every . A test of level is likewise a procedure whose probability of rejecting a true hypothesis is at most under every of the hypothesis.
