Definition
Let be a sample whose law depends on an unknown parameter . Let be a function and let . A confidence interval for with confidence level is a random interval , where are statistics, such that If only "" holds for each , the interval is a conservative confidence interval.
Remarks
Example: let be i.i.d. with known. Then is a confidence interval for with level approximately . If is unknown, one replaces with the sample standard deviation and with a quantile of Student's t-distribution with degrees of freedom. The probability refers to the random interval, not to . After one computes the interval from data, it either contains or it does not. The confidence level is often written as , for example for .
