Estimator
Builds on StatisticIndependent and identically distributed random variables
Definition
Let be a set of parameters, and for each let be a probability distribution. Let be a sample whose joint law is determined by an unknown . Let be a function. An estimator of is a statistic with values in , where does not depend on . The value of for observed data is an estimate of .
Remarks
The definition does not ask that is close to . One measures the quality of an estimator with its bias, its variance and its mean squared error. For an i.i.d. sample, the sample mean is an estimator of the mean, and the sample variance is an estimator of the variance. One often writes for an estimator of itself.

What this page needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
