Noncentral chi-squared distribution

Definition

Let kk be a positive integer and let μ1,…,μk\mu_1, \dots, \mu_k be real numbers. Let X1,…,XkX_1, \dots, X_k be independent random variables with Xi∼𝒩(μi,1)X_i \sim \mathcal{N}(\mu_i, 1), the normal distribution with mean μi\mu_i and variance 11. The distribution of Q=∑i=1kXi2Q = \sum_{i=1}^k X_i^2 depends only on kk and on λ=∑i=1kμi2\lambda = \sum_{i=1}^k \mu_i^2. It is the noncentral chi-squared distribution with kk degrees of freedom and noncentrality parameter λ\lambda, written χk′2(λ)\chi'^2_k(\lambda).

Remarks

For λ=0\lambda = 0 it is the chi-squared distribution with kk degrees of freedom. Its mean is k+λk + \lambda and its variance is 2(k+2λ)2(k + 2\lambda). Its density is a Poisson mixture of central chi-squared densities: f(x)=∑j=0∞e−λ/2(λ/2)jj!fk+2j(x),x>0,f(x) = \sum_{j=0}^{\infty} e^{-\lambda/2} \frac{(\lambda/2)^j}{j!} f_{k + 2j}(x), \quad x > 0, where fmf_m is the chi-squared density with mm degrees of freedom.

Example: if X∼𝒩(μ,1)X \sim \mathcal{N}(\mu, 1), then X2∼χ1′2(μ2)X^2 \sim \chi'^2_1(\mu^2), and E(X2)=1+μ2E(X^2) = 1 + \mu^2 agrees with the mean k+λk + \lambda.

Non-example: the variances must be 11. If X∼𝒩(0,4)X \sim \mathcal{N}(0, 4), then X2X^2 has mean 44 and variance 3232. A χ1′2(λ)\chi'^2_1(\lambda) variable with mean 44 has λ=3\lambda = 3 and variance 2(1+6)=142(1 + 6) = 14, so X2X^2 has no noncentral chi-squared distribution with one degree of freedom.
