Hodges–Lehmann estimator

Builds on MedianEstimator

Definition

Let x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n be real numbers. The Walsh averages are the n(n+1)/2n(n+1)/2 numbers (xi+xj)/2(x_i + x_j)/2 for 1≤i≤j≤n1 \le i \le j \le n. The one-sample Hodges–Lehmann estimator is the median of the Walsh averages: θ^=med⁡{xi+xj2:1≤i≤j≤n}.\hat\theta = \operatorname{med}\Big\{ \frac{x_i + x_j}{2} : 1 \le i \le j \le n \Big\}. For two samples x1,…,xmx_1, \dots, x_m and y1,…,yny_1, \dots, y_n, the two-sample Hodges–Lehmann estimator of the shift is Δ^=med⁡{yj−xi:1≤i≤m, 1≤j≤n}\hat\Delta = \operatorname{med}\set{y_j - x_i : 1 \le i \le m, \ 1 \le j \le n}.

Remarks

It is an estimator of the centre of symmetry θ\theta in the model of the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The estimate θ^\hat\theta is the value of tt for which the signed-rank statistic of x1−t,…,xn−tx_1 - t, \dots, x_n - t is closest to its null mean n(n+1)/4n(n+1)/4. Its asymptotic breakdown point is 1−1/2≈0.291 - 1/\sqrt{2} \approx 0.29.

Example: data (1,2,9)(1, 2, 9). The Walsh averages are 1,2,91, 2, 9 (for i=ji = j) and 1.5,5,5.51.5, 5, 5.5 (for i<ji < j); sorted, 1,1.5,2,5,5.5,91, 1.5, 2, 5, 5.5, 9. Their median is (2+5)/2=3.5(2 + 5)/2 = 3.5.

Non-example: the median of the averages (xi+xj)/2(x_i + x_j)/2 over i<ji < j only, without the terms i=ji = j, is a different estimator; for (1,2,9)(1, 2, 9) it gives 55. Both versions appear in the literature, so the convention should be stated.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
