Definition
Let be a family of densities with open. Let be observed data, and let be the log-likelihood, assumed twice differentiable in . The observed information at is the matrix that is, minus the Hessian matrix of the log-likelihood. For it is the number .
Remarks
It is usually evaluated at the maximum likelihood estimate , and is then positive semidefinite when is an interior maximum. If the data are independent with density , then under regularity conditions , where is the Fisher information. The inverse is a standard estimate of the covariance matrix of .
Example: Poisson data with mean and . Then , so . At this gives .
Non-example: minus the second derivative of the likelihood itself is not the observed information. In the Poisson example with and , at equals , while .
