Likelihood function
Builds on Probability mass functionProbability density functionIndependent and identically distributed random variables
Definition
Let be a set of parameters. For each , let be a probability mass function or a density on . It gives the law of the data when is the true parameter. For observed data , the likelihood function is the function with The log-likelihood is .
Remarks
For an i.i.d. sample with mass function or density for each observation, and . The likelihood is not a probability distribution on . In general, its integral over is not . Example: for successes in Bernoulli() trials, for . Only ratios matter for inference. These ratios compare how well two parameter values explain the data.
