Monotone likelihood ratio

Definition

Let Θ⊆ℝ\Theta \subseteq \R and let {fθ:θ∈Θ}\set{f_\theta : \theta \in \Theta} be a family of densities (or probability mass functions) on a sample space 𝒳\mathcal{X}. Let T ⁣:𝒳→ℝT \colon \mathcal{X} \to \R be a statistic. The family has a monotone likelihood ratio in TT if, for all θ1<θ2\theta_1 < \theta_2 in Θ\Theta:

  1. fθ1≠fθ2f_{\theta_1} \ne f_{\theta_2};
  2. there is a nondecreasing function g ⁣:ℝ→[0,∞]g \colon \R \to [0, \infty] with fθ2(x)/fθ1(x)=g(T(x))f_{\theta_2}(x)/f_{\theta_1}(x) = g(T(x)) for every xx with fθ1(x)>0f_{\theta_1}(x) > 0 or fθ2(x)>0f_{\theta_2}(x) > 0.

Here c/0=∞c/0 = \infty for c>0c > 0.

Remarks

The ratio in clause 2 is the likelihood ratio of θ2\theta_2 to θ1\theta_1 at the data xx. Example: let fθ(x)=h(x)exp⁡(η(θ)T(x)−A(θ))f_\theta(x) = h(x) \exp\big(\eta(\theta) T(x) - A(\theta)\big) be a one-parameter exponential family with η\eta strictly increasing. Then fθ2(x)/fθ1(x)=exp⁡((η(θ2)−η(θ1))T(x)−A(θ2)+A(θ1))f_{\theta_2}(x)/f_{\theta_1}(x) = \exp\big((\eta(\theta_2) - \eta(\theta_1)) T(x) - A(\theta_2) + A(\theta_1)\big), which is increasing in T(x)T(x). This covers the binomial law in pp with T(x)=xT(x) = x, and 𝒩(θ,1)\mathcal{N}(\theta, 1) with T(x)=xT(x) = x. Non-example: the Cauchy location family fθ(x)=1/(π(1+(x−θ)2))f_\theta(x) = 1/(\pi(1 + (x - \theta)^2)) fails clause 2 with T(x)=xT(x) = x. For θ1=0\theta_1 = 0 and θ2=1\theta_2 = 1, the ratio (1+x2)/(1+(x−1)2)(1 + x^2)/(1 + (x - 1)^2) tends to 11 as x→±∞x \to \pm\infty and is larger than 11 at x=1x = 1, so it is not monotone.
