Likelihood-ratio test
Builds on Likelihood functionStatistical hypothesis testMaximum likelihood estimation
Definition
Let be data with likelihood function for in a parameter set , and let . For data with , the likelihood-ratio statistic is The likelihood-ratio test of against rejects when . The constant is chosen so that , for a given level .
Remarks
Since , one has . The two suprema are the likelihoods at the restricted and the unrestricted maximum likelihood estimates, when these exist. One often uses , which is large when is small. Example: for i.i.d. and , one finds . So the test rejects when is large, which is the usual two-sided z-test. For two simple hypotheses, the test is the most powerful test of the Neyman–Pearson lemma.
